For over a decade, Australian premium lighting retailer Mondoluce has had the honour of working with one of New Zealand's most internationally acclaimed designers, David Trubridge. Known for setting a standard of design that is both sustainable and beautiful, David Trubridge draws endless inspiration from nature and is a passionate environmental advocate. It’s for this reason that his designs prioritise sustainability, using products such as bamboo in their construction.
Each lighting piece that comes from the David Trubridge headquarters in Hawke’s Bay is a unique creation that is also hand-assembled and then flat-packed for shipping, to reduce the carbon footprint. Recognised as a global leader in environmentally responsible design, the company’s commitment even extends to the process of recycling factory and studio waste where possible, as well as purchasing electricity directly from renewable sources.
20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CORAL
In 2023, one of David Trubridge’s most iconic creations, the Coral Pendant, celebrates its 20-year anniversary. As his first launched lighting design, Coral was inspired by David’s experiences underwater, with this stunning piece referencing the intricate patterns within coral itself.
The winner of numerous awards around the world, the Coral is based on the structure of a geometric polyhedron and is made from a single component that is repeated 60 times to create a modern-day classic. In Australia, the Coral remains one of Mondoluce’s most enduringly popular products for its versatility and the variety of settings in which it can be featured, from hotel and commercial office lobbies, to open voids and stairwells, and residential living, kitchen and even bedroom spaces.
CONCEPTUALISING TORU
Now, David's latest creation, the Toru pendant, is available at Mondoluce. Based on the award-winning Navicula feature light, Toru is crafted from strong, multi-layered bamboo plywood to create a sculptural statement in either a horizontal or vertical installation. The light's unique three-sided shape is the inspiration for its name, which comes from the Te Reo Māori word for "three".
With the option to install either horizontally or vertically, the Toru emits beautiful shadow patterns that create a warm and welcoming glow perfect for dining rooms, lounges, foyers, reception areas or as a corner statement piece.
David Trubridge will be the special guest of Mondoluce as he visits Australia during October this year. Sign up to the Mondoluce newsletter via their homepage for a chance to meet David in person at a series of exclusive showroom events.
In the meantime, should you wish to discuss how David Trubridge’s Toru, Coral, or any of his other amazing creations could suit your design requirements, Mondoluce’s team of industry experts is now available to provide lighting design consultations to customers in the company’s Sydney and Melbourne showrooms.
