All About

What does an architect do?

Architects don't just draw plans! They are highly trained construction industry professionals. Architects undertake a full range of services on all types of construction projects from small residential alterations to large scale public works. Architects are differentiated from other "building designers" by the depth and breadth of their training, their ability to provide a wide ranging and complete service and stringent professional and ethical regulations.

To be registered, an architect must complete an approved five year University degree, undertake a minimum of two years of post graduate work experience under the guidance of a registered architect and pass a rigorous registration exam conducted by an independent registration body.

Architects are the only professionals in the construction industry who are legally obliged to put their clients interests ahead of their own.

What regulations govern architects?

Regulations vary from state to state, but in Victoria architects registration and professional conduct is controlled by the Architects Registration Board of Victoria (ARBV), an independent government body. Only persons registered by the ARBV can legally use the terms "Architect" or "Architectural Design", or hold themselves out to be Architects. You can check your Architects registration status at the registration board's website at www.arbv.vic.gov.au.

How much does an architect charge?

Architects' fees vary from project to project. Many Architects base their fees on a percentage of the construction cost for a full service but a staged fixed fee can also be agreed, particularly for a partial service. The market is always competitive and the fee charged will often relate more to the experience of the architect and the nature of their practice.
Many people have a perception that Architects cost a lot. This is not necessarily the case. Usually the fee for doing drawings will be no different than an experienced draftsman, but the scope of service, skill and level of involvement will usually be much greater.

How can I find a suitable architect?

Architects are as diverse as the range of clients they serve. When employing an Architect it is important that you choose one that you feel will suit the type of project you are undertaking. Ask for references and look at previous projects to satisfy yourself that the architect you are talking to is right for you.
